onmode -c onmode -l question re: how to freeup log

Hi All,
I have a Dev environment and has a backup scripts setup before using "onbar -b
-l" and "onbar -b -L 0". Now, due to some space issues, most of the Dev DB
were removed on the list. In short to backup for these servers.
Because the logical logs are filling up and not able to backup, the DB server
goes down due to "logical log not found" error.
I don't want to setup LTAPEDEV and TAPEDEV to /dev/null and execute ontape -a.
Here's the question:
1. does the "onmode -c" (force checkpoint) and "onmode -l"(switch to next
logical log) free-up the logical logs totally?
2. What do you think the best alternative solution on problem on logical logs
filling up? (without backing up).
Thanks and regards,
My bad!.. the effect of "onmode -l" is the reversal... can't backup the logs
now..
Hi All,
As I understand, the "onmode -l" will not free-up the logical logs, instead,
it will just move to the next logical log. Onmode -c will force checkpoint.
Since changing the LTAPEDEV parameter to /dev/null will require a restart of
IDS to take effect, what i did is keep the original value of
LTAPEDEV=/home/informix/log/ltapedev. I just created a link of
/home/informix/log/ltapedev to /dev/null. Then, i executed "ontape -a". So
far, i was able to free-up the logical logs.
My problem now is, "onbar -b -l" will not work unless the storage is setup
properly.
If you have any other alternative solution on backing up logical logs, kindly
let me know.
Thanks,

Back them up with onbar or ontape or set LTAPEDEV to /dev/null so they are
discarded upon filling. Those are the ONLY alternatives.

Hi Art, Thanks once again. You're right. What i did is let the original value of LTAPEDEV but created a link to /dev/null as LTAPEDEV doesn't work if i set it directly to /dev/null. Orig LTAPEDEV = /home/informix/backup/ltapedev filename. I did rm ltapedev, then did a "ln -sf /dev/null ltapedev". It worked.
