Have fun -- it's hard. A much better idea is to use sqgetdbs() which is even documented in the 7.2 ESQL/C manuals -- it has been around since time immemorial, but only got documented rather recently. See also the code in the IIUG software archives (http://www.iiug.org) which has what you need to make it work on antique versions of ESQL/C as well as working on the normal versions.
