Here is my $.02 worth.... If the goal is to have one 'real' copy of your 7Gb database and another instance of Online simply point to it then I'd suggest investigating the use of synonyms. (Available in 5.0 and maybe earlier). This will give you the flexibility of creating/modifying/testing local tables in your development instances by simply changing or removing the synonym pointer. This implies using separate dbspaces for your production and development instances (your development dbspace should be much smaller). This will keep the applications from corrupting one another. WARNING: There are known bugs in Online 5.0 and I-Star 5.0 HP platform which make the above scenario unreliable. (I have no info on other platforms) In certain cases, outer-join select statements return incorrect results (while using I-Star). According to Informix the problem is deep in the optimizer. This problem, as of yet, is not fixed in the 5.01 release. <The following is not related to the original post> Another bug in the Online 5.0 platform involves floats being rounded during multiplication. A simple 4gl test illustrates the problem. Simply update a float field by assigning it the product of 2 float variables. Display the updated field. Has any other platform seen these problems?
