For security purposes won't it be better to use dummy accounts on each
of the machines with logins disabled? In each of their home directories
you include entries similar to that of the hosts.equiv in the ".rhosts"
file. For other users who have no equivalent accounts in any of the
other machines, the .netrc file in their local machine could be used.
For eg:
Host Account
alpha1 staracct
alpha2 staracct
sco staracct
In the .rhosts files of each "staracct" home directory, include the
other two machines and their login accounts. For eg in alpha1's staracct
the entry in the .rhosts file would be:
alhpa2 staracct
sco staracct
Taking alpha2 as an examble. If a link is to be made to database A in
aplha1, let "staracct" in alpha2 be the owner of the link (ie owner of
the dummy database - database A). Now if user "someuser" in alpha2,
wants to access the database A, just include that account in the .netrc
file of "staracct" in alpha2.
Hope I got this right. Tried it once, and worked like a dream. Did not
want anybody "rlogiing" into machines they should not have access to and
messing around.

This file is used by clients requesting database services from a remote
database server. Please note that the remote server can reside on the
same host machine as the client.
I believe, it should be:
db_server_name protocol hostName service_name
where
- db_server_name is the name which informix uses to attach to a remote
online instance. This name, in v5 can vary from machine to machine and
need not be similar to the server name given in the tbconfig of the
physical online instance.
- hostName the name of the machines (eg: alpha1, alpha2, sco)
- service name as that quoted in the /etc/services

TBCONFIG=tbconfig.yours
No $INFORMIXSERVER environment variable defined.
