You do need Informix-Net if you use the standard Intersolve Data Direct drivers. They use I-Net on your client to interface to OnLine. If you by the SequeLink versions instead you need nothing extra from Informix. You do however need to install SequeLink on both your client and server. Even if it where possible to talk to OnLine via some standard RPC mechanism (I don't know if it is), you would have to have some layer of software on your client that could do this. That's essentially what I-Net for the client is. There are other alternatives like OpenLink and SQL Retriever that also give you ODBC without extra software from Informix working essentially the same way as SequeLink. All this is so incredibly simple I don't grasp what's wrong with the industry - why don't at least the suppliers understand this and tell their customers up front?
