The solution was to upgrade to Exceed 5.1.3. Be forewarned that 1) it's a $125 upgrade, and 2) Exceed 6 has been announced. Exceed 5.1.3 has performed much better; if you're still on 5.1.1, I'd suggest that you upgrade....
