ids 11.5/win2k3 Virtualization

Hello all, I am very inexperienced with IDS, and need a little help! We have a legacy order entry/inventory system built around ids 11.5, win 2k, four j's. The system uses only one ids database/instance. We are currently in the process of shutting down our business, and I need to archive this system and all its data...just in case! I have done a Backup Exec backup to virtual, and brought up the virtual version of the server. For some reason the server instance did not show up on the new machine, i.e. instance manager shows no instances. The rootdbs_dat.000, and all the chunk files are present. So how do I go about reestablishing the instance. After poking around with instance manager, it appears that that is probably not the right tool. btw I am not sure what the Server number,Service Name,Port number are...how do I find those on the old physical server.
Tony:
I have no idea what "instance manager" is, so it is probably, as you note,
not the tool you need. The information about server number and
server/instance name and server aliases are defined in the ONCONFIG file,
which is found in $INFORMIXDIR/etc and could be named "onconfig" or
something like "onconfig.<servername>". There is an onconfig.std file which
is the delivered sample file and is most likely not the active ONCONFIG
file. The user informix's environment usually defines INFORMIXDIR and
ONCONFIG so looking for $INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG usually works for user
informix.
There is also a file known as the sqlhosts file. It is usually
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts but could be named anything and even placed
elsewhere. If "informix" has the variable SQLHOSTS set the file is
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/$SQLHOSTS if INFORMIXSQLHOSTS is set then that is an
absolute path to the file and is required to be set if the file is not in
$INFORMIXDIR/etc. This file maps IP address and port # (or service name) to
a server name or server alias.
You start an instance by executing "oninit -vw" with $INFORMIXDIR/bin in
your path and $INFORMIXDIR/lib included in LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
Beyond that I refer you to the FINE manuals online at:
http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSGU8G_12.1.0/com.ibm.adref.doc/ids_a
dr_0210.htm
Or I can offer to physically help, but that would be a for-fee project.

Instance Mangler [instmgr.exe] is an Windoze tool that ships with the
product.

Instance Manager IS your friend. I don't know what you mean by / it means that the instance isn't there -=20 isn't it visible e.g. in Windows service manager ... or Informix Instance=20 Manager? If so, it must have vanished from the registry. Using Instance Manager, you'd simply recreate your instance specifying the = same root chunk path (anything else shouldn't be as important if=20 application and database are on same system). You'd NOT initialize this new instance, unless you've first moved your=20 good old chunks to a save place. With this new instance down, you'd now place the old chunks at their=20 original location and bring up (not initialize) the server as usual (in=20 the instance's newly created cmd window: net start %informixserver%) HTH Andreas From: "TONY BLAKE" <tony.blake@gwnursery.com> To: ids@iiug.org Date: 06.04.2016 16:23 Subject: ids 11.5/win2k3 Virtualization [36909] Sent by: ids-bounces@iiug.org Hello all,=20 I am very inexperienced with IDS, and need a little help!=20 We have a legacy order entry/inventory system built around ids 11.5, win=20 2k,=20 four j's. Hi Tony, Were the informix data files on separate disks to the operating system? If so, did the new virtual instance pick up the correct/original drive letter - sometimes these whole image restores to new hardware/virtual can get that wrong which breaks things. Also, if your informix is using domain authentication then you may want to keep a virtual domain controller also to avoid errors when informix tries to start.
