concatenating strings

Hi friends, Can any one help me to performe a query to select a char colomns concatenated. I want to do someting like this : select col1[1,length(col1)]||col2[1,length(col2)]|| from ... where ... the previous query dont work, but it just give you an idea what I want to do.
