Replication
Posted in 2010
A DBA asked whether Enterprise Replication (ER) in IDS 11.50.FC5 still requires tables to have primary keys, and whether any release lifts that requirement. The consensus answer: yes, primary keys are still required, and no generally available IDS release removes the requirement. An IBM developer (Madison Pruet) explained why: ER uses the primary key as a global row identifier so the same row can be matched on every participating node, so some key is unavoidable. Question answered; no workaround discussed.

Does anyone know if you still have to use primary keys if using ER in v11.50.fc5? If so, is there a release where it is no longer a requirement. Thanks in advance for any info.... Peter Logan Senior Database Administrator Phone: 616/878-8309

Thanks in advance for any info.... Yes, you still do. No, I don't think there is a version where this requirement goes away. As far as I know, it's a pretty integral part of ER, and there aren't any plans for it to change. -- Cheers, Obnoxio The Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com I will now proceed to pleasure myself with this fish. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by OpenProtect(http://www.openprotect.com), and is believed to be clean.

The answer is, there is no Informix Dynamic Server version that is CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IN GENERAL RELEASE that does not require a primary key for ER replication. Art Art S. We use the primary key to act as a global rowid. We have to have somet= hing to identify the row on each of the nodes and that is what the primary k= ey is used for. So yes - we have to have a key in order to identify the ro= w.
