Branding error while Installing informix on solaris
Posted in 2007
A user hit a "branding" error installing IDS (reported as 10.2, i.e. 10.00.xC2) on Solaris 10 x86. Respondents suspected the downloaded distribution was for the wrong architecture (e.g. SPARC build on Intel), noting the Java installer doesn't check hardware. Suggested checks: confirm the exact download filename and run 'file' on $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit or the brand program to see whether it reports SPARC or x86; if SPARC, get the Intel build. Another poster reported the same symptom from a wrong-platform bundle. The original poster never confirmed, so no resolution is recorded.

Could you help us help you? Which version of Solaris? Which version of IDS? Any chance you have a SPARC version of IDS installing on Intel, or vice versa? Have you installed IDS before? Typically, this means there's a problem of some sort with the distribution - if the brand program won't work, neither will the rest of IDS, most often. Merry Christmas! -=JL=-
Thanks LJ for the reply... Solaris version 10 IDS version 10.2 I am not using SPARC instead i m installing on x86. I have not installed Informix before ,this is the first time i m installing ids on solaris. what is the name of the file you downloaded? eg C912BNA.tar? -- Neil Truby t:01932 724027 Director m:07798 811708 Ardenta Limited e:neil.truby@ardenta.com "ssameer via DBMonster.com" <u40142@uwe> wrote in message news:7d3f6b859fd42@uwe... > Thanks LJ for the reply... > > Solaris version 10 > IDS version 10.2 > I am not using SPARC instead i m installing on x86. > I have not installed Informix before ,this is the first time i m > installing > ids on solaris. > > Jonathan Leffler wrote: >>> I got branding error while trying to install informix on solaris >>> environment. >>> Can anyone help me to fix this error???? >> >>Could you help us help you? >> >>Which version of Solaris? >>Which version of IDS? >> >>Any chance you have a SPARC version of IDS installing on Intel, or >>vice versa? >> >>Have you installed IDS before? >> >>Typically, this means there's a problem of some sort with the >>distribution - if the brand program won't work, neither will the rest >>of IDS, most often. >> >>Merry Christmas! >> >>-=JL=- > > -- > Message posted via http://www.dbmonster.com >

There is no version 10.2 of anything Informix. I suspect you are thinking of 10.00.xC2 (where x is either U or F, indicating 32-bit or 64-bit). Is the version you obtained definitely for Solaris and Intel? You may have to find the brand program in $INFORMIXDIR/etc, or any executable from $INFORMIXDIR/bin, and see what 'file program' says (eg: 'file $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit). If it says SPARC, then you've got the wrong product and need to obtain the Intel version of IDS. If 'file program' says Intel x86, the problem is something else. Are you using the Java-based installer? I imagine you must be - I wonder if it bothers to detect that it is running on the wrong hardware...apparently not. > Jonathan Leffler wrote: > >> I got branding error while trying to install informix on solaris environment. > >> Can anyone help me to fix this error???? > > >Could you help us help you? > > >Which version of Solaris? > >Which version of IDS? > > >Any chance you have a SPARC version of IDS installing on Intel, or > >vice versa? > > >Have you installed IDS before? > > >Typically, this means there's a problem of some sort with the > >distribution - if the brand program won't work, neither will the rest > >of IDS, most often. -=JL=-
Jonathan Leffler wrote: > Any chance you have a SPARC version of IDS installing on Intel, or > vice versa? I would agree with this diagnosis. This is where the installation failed for me when I was installing IDS 10.00.FC2 for IBM Power 5 on Linux on an x86_64 box; you get quite a long way through before it fails. I of course needed IDS 10.00.FC2 on Linux for x86_64. I think what is causing the confusion here is the version numbering, which just uses 'F' for 64-bit regardless of platform. Can I make a suggestion that different letters are used for different platforms (hardware/OS combination) since only 'U', 'F' and 'H' are used at present? Ben.
