Thanks to all that replied.
I found, with some help, that you need to issue a connect statement. A
database statement does not work.
example:
export INFORMIXSERVER=online_A
export DBPATH=\\\\online_B
If online_A server is down and I issue a connect statement the client
application will automatically connect me to online_B.
