On-line engine startup failure

We're trying to install the on-line engine on a new machine.
I think we've done everything right in terms of setting
environmental variables and tbconfig parameters and slicing and dicing
of the hard disk.
But we keep on getting the following error
when running tbinit or tbmonitor.
segralgh: [~] 128> tbinit -s
tbinit: fatal error in shared memory initialization
segralgh: [~] 129>
Pertinent info follows:
segralgh: [~] 129> ls -al /dev/rinformix

We have one machine already running with the above parameters.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Is the machine a sparc running sunos 4.1.2? If so, then you need to force shared memory to be resident. Took me ages to work that one out :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Lacey, IS Engineering Manager, The Bishop's Manor, Howden, UK.
