database recovery

Hi,
I had made a major mistake in history - removed a
chunk file accidentally. The bad thing is that I
don't even have a backup (DONT!)
Now, oninit just complains that it couldn't find
the primary chunk file, and never starts up the
database.
HELP! What can I do? I don't mind losing the
data inside the chunk but I would like to recover
as much as possible.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Tom,
If you wish to send it to a professional data recovery company I
recommend Ibas, we have been recovering data since 1982 and are
considered by many to be the best.
Please feel free to visit our group website at www.ibas.no or our new
UK site at www.ibasuk.com.
Good luck.
Best regards

Just ONE of the reasons to NOT use COOKED files for chunks!

Ooh, bad bad bad! But you knew that.

Yup.

In the ONCONFIG file change ONDBSPACEDOWN to zero (0) meaning CONTINUE.
Now create a file, of the correct size, having the location, ie path, of
the original, deleted, chunk. Now bring the engine online. It will
complain and mark the chunk and perhaps the dbspace down but the engine
will come up. You MAY now be able to drop the dbspace using onspaces.

Nope, chunks marked down cannot be dropped. Informix will dial in
and if the chunk is in the middle of the list may tell you they will
refuse to mark it online so you can drop it.
We had no data in that chunk (managed to dbexport all databases ok)
yet Informix still refused to mark the chunk as online so we could
drop it! We had to spent a weekend dbexporting and still haven't
managed to import everything over a week later since the other
databases are test ones and the customer does not want us importing
whilst users are on (in the day) or whilst backups/cron jobs are
running (weekday evenings). I've had to work one weekend and will have
to work another since informix refused to mark an empty chunk as up
so we could drop it. We had told the customer Informix would take
1 hour to mark it up! The customer lost the live database for 2 days
whilst we exported eventhing and imported just the live database.
They have complained to us that this was another weekend when the user
could not use the live system!
Don't assume informix will mark chunks as up!
David.
PS Whilst a chunk is down ontape level 0 archives fail so you cannot
even backup the system! Our customer had to live with no backups for
a week! Made us look good! Instead of 1 hour on Monday morning it's
no backups all week, customers IT staff required to work late Friday
and no system Sat/Sun!
