Connection to the database is slow

I am running online 7.12 on solaris and it seems that the initial connection to the database is extremely slow through the PC clients via New Era applications and ilogin. Once the connection is established the response seems to be OK. Any ideas why that is so? Pinging to the database server machine works fine which made me rule out any network problems. Thanks Mukta
