Such as Foxpro, Access, Powerbuilder, Dbase ... Foxpro, Access and Dbase can basicaly be used for nothing but toy type applications. (Access can be used for simple reporting and debugging type access to the database.) Powerbuilder works fine if you are content with thick client solutions only. Otherwise it's basically useless. Visual Basic works fine with the same caveat as Powerbuilder. Delphi is probably better than Powerbuilder and Visual Basic but is also only for thick clients. As you are asking for tools for windows frontend programming these tools are fine. If you need to do serverside programming as well or better do multi tier solutions, your options aren't all that wide. I know some people are successfully using Forte. To me that's too expensive, and the company isn't all that large. We are using Java, but are in the process of realy starting to use it now. We are currently using IBM Visual Age for Java for development. A great tool in itself. I hope to be able to report back in a few weeks with some better information on how this actually works out (some performance numbers and other issues).
