Dear All, Why informix installation using root id on the UNIX server? Is there reason for this? Thank you very much --001a11c3799c540ad704e82852d4
Yes. This is because of the need for the server to perform operations AS different connected users in the OS which it can ONLY do as root. Why does Informix require this when other RDBMS systems do not? Because it uses a shared virtual processor design rather than a server process per user session as others (like Oracle) do. Once the server is installed with the proper privileges set in the executables, user 'informix' or any member of the DBSA group can start the server or shut it down. However, you do not have to install as root, you can do a private server installation as a different user, but only that user will be able to connect to the server. Art Art S.
