Re: Choose New Era???

Yes, but David, isn't the real advantage of NewEra coming to light when you do application partitioning? Of course this isn't a panacea. In some cases you will even get worse responce times for one of several reasons (too many small requests going over the network, more data moved between objects than at the sql/db level, overloaded server++). In other cases you might gain significantly by doing dataprocessing on the server and send less data over the network. Some parts of many applicataions also have to run on the server (batch updates, some reports++). In small systems for best performance, in large systems often the one and only option. Here it seems to me the advantage of one language to do it all in is significant. I seem to remember Kerry said he was using 4GL programs started via the system command of a stored procedure in some such cases. Many others use Cobol or C programs for this. Although it might actually work very well, to me the single language advantage is prety significant. We don't use NewEra for mostly the same reasons Kerry don't although I know you and others are successful with it. We are however actively investigating Java which we think can give you all the advantages of NewEra and Delphi combined and then some. Nice GUI interface (still some things lacking, but coming in Java). Applications can be partitioned extensively. May be we can write thin clients (Delphi can't - yet at least, NewEra never realy delivered on that promise, nor do I think it ever will). It has an all important multithreading built into the language. I could do a lot with that in a gui environement to make realy snappy applications. CORBA (to the extent it will work), TP monitor and other tool support allready is available and more is coming by the day (one need real ease of use here and performance). Tools are very low priced and runtime is cheap, moving towards zero. It's in the face of this a current evaluation of NewEra, Delphi and other similar tools gets realy interesting. david@go5.com (David W Chan) wrote: :kerry@kcbbs.gen.nz (Kerry Sainsbury) wrote: : :>In article <5h1kpj$p2k$1@despair.u-net.com>, david@go5.com (David W Chan) wrote: : :>>The problem with Delphi compared to NewEra is that you can't build big :>>systems with it.
