As best I can tell, if you're going to use their data-aware controls, :you have to use a dbAnywhere server. It's certainly true that their :database project wizards all use dbAnywhere-based controls. You could, of :course, use JDBC and not use their dbAnywhere controls, but in that case you :might as well stick with plain Visual Cafe. As I have understood it dbAnywhere is realy JDBC with some cashing added in a server part of the product. However for JDK 1.0.2 they had to mangle the JDBC class names to make them loadable across the network (when you develop applets). This should no longer be necessary with JDK 1.1. Does anyone know if the datacontrols of Visual Cafe 2.0 Database development edition (which is their first JDK 1.1 based product) will be usable with straight JDBC? If that is not the case I think Visual Cafe will not be all that usefull. dbAnywhere is (or was at least) an expensive product. Visual Cafe 2.0 is also supposed to support Java Beans so it should be possible to get hold of a diverse set of controls that use JDBC directly. That may make it usefull anyway even if the built in controls doesn't work with JDBC. We are waiting for this version of the product.
