TJ I use MSAccess 2000 linked to Informix 9.21 using ODBC (System DSN, Informix 3.34 32 Bit) on Win NT 4.00.1381. I sometimes get ODBC errors but this is often when the Informix table schema has changed and I have not refreshed the table links. I have also just checked sorting (Using A-Z) on non-indexed columns and it is fine. I hope this provides some help.
