Parallel Backups using onbar
Posted in 1998
I have some questions concerning parallel backups using onbar. We are running
a large OLTP application on a SUN 10000 platform usint Informix 7.23. We are
using onbar with Veritas Netbackup as the storage manager:
When backing up logical logs, does onbar take advantage of parallel
processing? It appears that logical logs are backed serially no matter what
the setting of BAR_MAX_BACKUP.
Also I find setting BAR_MAX_BACKUP to require a huge increase in shared
memory. During my initial testing, I had the following setup:
SHMTOTAL 1040000 # Total shared memory (Kbytes). 0=>unlimited
# Backup/Restore variables
BAR_ACT_LOG /tmp/bar_act.log
BAR_MAX_BACKUP 5
BAR_DEBUG 7
BAR_DEBUG_LOG /tmp/bar_dbg.log
BAR_RETRY 1
BAR_NB_XPORT_COUNT 10
BAR_XFER_BUF_SIZE 31
Page size is 2K
When I increase BAR_MAX_BACKUP to 5, I got the following warning in
bar_act.log:
1998-11-19 11:32:09 5448 5446 BAR_MAX_BACKUP has been reduced to 1 to avoid
allocating more than SHMTOTAL KB
I then increased shared memory:
SHMTOTAL 2040000 # Total shared memory (Kbytes). 0=>unlimited
I then saw the warning:
1998-11-19 15:14:07 29262 29259 BAR_MAX_BACKUP has been reduced to 3 to
avoid allocating more than SHMTOTAL KB.
It seems to me this is using a lot more memory then what the calculations call
for. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help. Its OK to respond via email.
Thanks
