RE: Informix

Jonathan, I think you make a lot of sense with your version of things. One thing I can confirm is that Turbo was launched in 1987, after all that was why I joined the company, and I4GL was about 1 year before that. R4GL (I4GL RDS) came out in late 1988. Again, I remember it well as I had it delivered to me for an exhibition. And I think that Online 4 was either 1989 or 1990, probably the latter. I seem to remember talking to you when we were looking for developers to write applications to launch Online and you developed a sample database and application. I also believe that ACE and Perform were originally products for the reporting and data entry of C-ISAM files, which were then grouped with other bits to produce a product called Informa, which later became Informix. But that was way before my time. Although I have grey hair, I don't go back that far. I'm pretty darned sure I've never seen any Ingres code in any of the Informix products. Would anyone be aware of such code in Informix? I also thought that the first product from RDS was likely to be C-ISAM, and that Marathon (which was, I thought, a code name for the product that was later named Informix) was built on top of C-ISAM. I see that the Informix Handbook site has a release date of 1984 for I4GL too - that, I'm 99% sure, is two years early. When I joined Sphinx in the UK in June 1986, we just started with ISQL 2.00 and I4GL 1.00 (running under Zeus on Zilog Z8000 boxes, and later on a AT&T 3B2/400 - a mighty powerhouse of a machine), with ISQL 1.10 also available as the prior version. ISQL 2.00 was followed by ISQL 2.10 (I4GL 1.10) and then ISQL 2.10.03 (I4GL 1.10.03 - which introduced the p-code system). Turbo was also released about then. One reason for the version number .03 was to avoid renumbering the software as ISQL 3.x since that would have caused confusion with the pre-SQL version of Informix 3.30, which was still too recent for comfort. That was why the unified version numbering jumped to version 4.00 - to avoid that confusion. (I note that ESQL/C for ISQL 2.x had a 3.x version number.) Does anybody want to correct this version of history? OK - calling a 3B2/400 a powerhouse is a little far-fetched, but the rest? -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/ sending to informix-list
