Your main problem is that you've not looked carefully enough at the Informix Guide to SQL: Reference, and specifically the chapter on the structure of the system catalogue. SysSynonyms was used by pre-4.0 systems to handle synonyms. It is left over as a relic form those days. Synonyms are now detailed in SysTables and SysSynTable.
