Informix and signals

Dear People: I have to write a small c subroutine that will be linked to a 4GL application. That is the easy part. Additionaly, I want to communicate with my c code using signals. This is "terra incognita" to me. Can anybody out there tell me what should I do in order create such an application? Sample code would be more that appreciated. Thanks, Alex
