hello, can any one tell me exactly the definition for light append and what does that mean?? bye sudhakar -- Posted via CNET Help.com http://www.help.com/
Hope I get this correct... Normally when a row is inserted into a table, the existing pages are examined to see if there is a spot within the existing pages that the row will fit. This is done by first attempting to use the last page that an insert was done. Then we examine the 'bitmap' pages to see if we can find a spot. Finally if it appears that there is no spot in the existing allocated pages, a new extent is added or the last extent is expanded. Then the row is inserted, indexes are updated, and a whole bunch of log records are created. With HPL fast mode (i.e. Express) we to light appends. What this means is that we allocate an extent and stuff rows into it. Then when HPL finishes, we simply append these new extents to the existing extents of he table. Then all we have to log is the extent allocation. Of course, this means that the existing indices must be rebuilt and a backup must be done. (Hope I didn't mess this up...) sudhakar wrote: > hello, > can any one tell me exactly the definition for light append and what does > that mean?? > bye > sudhakar > > -- > Posted via CNET Help.com > http://www.help.com/
