Re: How to get release versions
Posted in 1994
Many, many moons ago, Colin Mcgrath was kind enough to post a list of
commands and options to show serial, version and release information
for several Informix products.
I took the script, and embellished it out, and made it easy to use on
any platform. Whenever you need to list all the software packages you
have installed, just run the script. Not everyone have all packages,
but the script takes care of that by checking to see if package is
installed. I also added checks for runtime versions of SQL and 4GL,
and QuickStep. There is no way to differinate between OnLine and
OnLine Runtime packages. I'm sure I have missed many others, such as
ESQL/Ada, ESQL/Cobol, and so forth, because I don't have these
packages. If some kind soul would supply me with names and indicate
if -V works, or what other options are needed, and if output goes to
standard output or standard error, then I would add them to the script.
To check to see if a particular command sends its output to standard
output, or standard error:
Example:
# if you see any output, it is coming from standard error
$ isql -V 1>/dev/null
# if you see any output, it is coming from standard output
$ isql -V 2>/dev/null
Original email from which I have culled the commands and their options
from. Thanks, Colin !
