Hi, are you running the client application (i.e. the ESQL/C program) on the same machine as the IDS server ? In that case and with your additional information I'm inclined to believe that you are somehow running out of some system resource like "number of open file descriptors" or similar. Note that usually for these resources there is a system wide limit (besides per process limits). In your case I would guess you hit the system wide limit. Check your ESQL/C application and make sure that it closes files properly after use and does not leave things open (creating a resource leak). If that is not the case, then consider increasing the appropriate limit for the resource in question.
