Splitting logical logs

Hi everybody,
we use to back up our logical logs using "ontape -c", for example in a file
named "trans.log".
As a consequence, when restoring a Level-0 backup using ontape -r, we can
only restore *all* logical logs contained in the trans.log or *no* logical
log.
Assume, the trans.log contains the logical logs 500 - 600.
Is there a way to
- restore just the logical logs 500 - 590
or
- to split the trans.log in 101 different log-files (500-600) in order to
restore the logical logs 500 - 590 sequential?
Thanks for any answer!
Best Regards
Markus
Use dd with an appropriate count to output a truncated copy of trans.log to
trans_short.log.

Hi Neil,
thanks for your answer!
What do you mean by "an appropriate count"?
Is it sure, that each logical-log file has exactly the same size?
Using dd, I think it's hard to find the correct truncation-point.

Hi,
no, logical log backups are not all the same size.
It is possible, but only under specific circumstances.
What you can do (and I guess what Neil means) is that you
simply can "truncate" the log backup to some arbitrary
size. With that the restore will recognize that the logical log
is "finished" and will at that point stop, rollback open
transactions and bring the server to quiescent mode.
However, it would be rather difficult to do the truncation
just at the actual boundary between 2 logical log backups.
Thus, with the "trick" from Neil is is possible to cut short the
log restore, but in general it will not be at a discrete point.
What you want to achive is quite easy with ON-Bar, the
alternative backup/restore tool for IDS. For restore you
can specify, up to which log unique ID logs shall be restored.
You can even use a timestamp (rather then log unique ID)
where the time stamp can be "in the middle of a log file".
You can read more about ON-Bar in the "Backup and Restore
Guide" manual.
Regards,
Martin
