Unless my memory is addled (not impossible), the DATE and EDATE types in
Informix 3.3 (pre-SQL) was essentially the same as in the Informix
SQL-based products, ie the value was the integer number of days since 31
December 1899 (making 1 January 1900 into day 1). The reason for most of
the date values having the first two bytes 0 is that 5th June 2079 has the
hex representation 0xFFFF, so only dates prior to 31st December 1899 and
dates after 5th June 1899 require any of the high-order bits set.
