Why is this? Jonathan Leffler has, rightly, asked me to post a clarification of my original response. Although the notes I posted are correct that if you use the connect statement the local server specified in INFORMIXSERVER does not have to be active, the environment variable has to be set to the name of a server mentioned in the local sqlhosts file. That server does not actually have to be online, indeed it can be conpletely spurious and not exist at all! But the INFORMIXSERVER variable has to be set to something as the libraries expect it and will look up the value in sqlhosts. I strongly suspect that the hostname and servicename must also exist in the hosts and services files, respectively, but I have not tested that. Art S. Kagel
