Why should I upgrade my 7.31 instance to 9.4 or 10.0

We have a PeopleSoft 7.52 installation still running on IDS 7.31.UC4. I want to upgrade/migrate the database to a newer version of Informix, probably 9.40.FC7 or 10.0.FC6. The version will be dictated by the PS 8.48 or 8.49 tools that we install. I'm looking for reasons that would help me sell this idea to my upper management. I can think of a few reasons that make me want to make to move, such as: longer object names (The 18 character limit is a thorn in my side), better buffer management (I think, someone please confirm this), IDS 7.31 is reportedly EOS in April of 2009 Quite honestly I'm having a hard time coming up with a good list of reasons since we've been running in this configuration for 7 or more years and it just runs. You have to love Informix for this trate but right now I just wish it'd break so that I'd have a good reason to get it upgraded. Can anyone help me out in making a case? P.S. On the flip side if anyone has any reasons not to perform this upgrade chime in on that as well. DL

Well, Mark Jamison gave you plenty, although if Mark weer in my sales team I'd tell him not to mistake features for benefits ;-) I loved Carsten's idea of disabling a few indexes and saying it needs an upgrade! >> P.S. On the flip side if anyone has any reasons not to perform this >> upgrade chime in on that as well. You'll have to buy v7 -> v9,10,11 upgrade licences, as IBM continues to charge an uplift to move. I think you've highlighted a constant problem persuading users to move off v7: there is a licence cost to upgrade, as well as the softer migration costs, and it can be difficult to make the benefits case. If you don't want to use datablases, UDRs, can live with 2g chunks then the benefits can be vague. If I had to guess I expect that, as the EoS date approaches, IBM will abandon the uplift licence charge. I have absolutely no inside knowledge (we're an IBM Premier Business Partner so I'd be the last to know ;-)), but that's just my gut feeling as to what will happen. Of course, it could just as easily go the other way and IBM may decide that customers will upgrade to avoid being out-of-support and will pay accordingly ...

ontape -s -t STDOUT -L 0 | gzip | encrypt > /backupdir/backup.`date
'+%y.%m.%d-%H:%M:%s'`
for one.
Encrypts the backup (for security)
Compressess the backup (for cost reduction - fewer resource requirements
for the backup.
