AIX4 (and possibly AIX5 too) indeed limits the number of shared segments
any one process may own, i think it's in the region of 11. Shared mem
segments are 256MB in size, so Informix can only use about 2.5GB of the
8GB you have. You need to try and align your memory sizes to 256MB
boundaries to get the max.
We did away with shared mem connections so we don't have a comms segment
- even it is quite small it takes one of the 11'ish possible segments:
$ onstat -g seg
...Segment Summary:

And yes, up your buffers.
