RE: Why IBM will continue to fail in their 'Stealth' marketing attempts.

Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be a joke. The website tries to hide their ownership and while they admit that IBM sponsors them, the site distances themselves from IBM by saying that anything posted on the site isn't an official opinion or statement from IBM. To confuse things more... supposedly there is a moderator. (None of my posts have been moderated.) There's supposed to be *official* responses from IBM. Yet if the site isn't an official IBM site, how can you get an *official* response from IBM? Its a frigging joke. It looks like some twit in marketing decided that it would be a good idea to try and create some 'grassroots' buzz about IBM's products. The only problem is that if the 'buzz' came from IBM, it would be discounted as some marketing BS. (Which it is.) At the same time, the marketing 'guru' thought it would be nice to try and create some FUD about Oracle without making it look like FUD. So how do you create a 'third party website' that you can control that will achieve your marketing goals. In short, the individuals behind this effort tried to look 'smart' and instead are looking 'smurt'. One would expect that because IBM moves at a snails pace on anything, that they would have taken the time to figure out how to properly set something up. Here's a free clue. If you want the site to look, feel and act as if its independent, you make it an independent site. An example is the IIUG site. Sure its an independent user group. Sure there's a bunch of loud mouth a$$h0l3$ who are critical of IBM's management or lack of management. IBM supports the IIUG and provides the necessary capital to keep it afloat. Now do you really think that the IIUG will bite the hand that feeds them? ;-) The reality is that while the IIUG is critical of the fscktwits within IBM, they still love the product. Can you name another product pimped by IBM that has that same loyalty? Free clue to IBM. You want to attract customers, build a better mouse trap and not try to BS that you have the better mouse trap. You want to do a grassroots marketing campaign, you do a grassroots marketing campaign by building the grassroots. But hey! What do I know? ;-) Peace out! -G > Date: Wed, 8 Jun 2011 17:05:28 +0100 > From: obnoxio@serendipita.com > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: Re: Why IBM will continue to fail in their 'Stealth' marketing attempts. > > On 08/06/2011 14:25, Ian Michael Gumby wrote: > > IBM's IM Marketing team makes Informix's former marketing team look like > > a brain trust. > > Ha!
