4GL/ACE: How do You get nice reports ??

Sirs, I don't want to include printer specific code into my 4GL or ACE sources. So I use a small selfmade filter for adding capabilities like bold-face, bigger and smaller print, underlining, etc. to my reports. But this filter isn't powerfull enough. I think, that perhaps TeX is a good to for getting much better output on every printer. The problem with TeX is, that You must write a subroutine for replacing some letters (the braces, german "umlauts"). Do You have experience with formatting tools? How do You get nice outputs ?
