We are planning to migrate an application from Sybase to Informix in order to expand our potential customer base. We have developed some metrics in order to estimate our total effort. I would appreciate any feedback from others who have done similar work and might be able to help us with our metrics/estimation. Our application is written in dblib and has the following characteristics: 750 lines of table definition 3700 lines of view definition 550 lines of index definition 2600 lines of trigger definition and usage 9500 lines of stored procedure definition and usage 2100 lines of miscellaneous SQL usage This totals to about 20,000 lines of database interaction. Our metric is: 80% of the work will be translation 20% will be fresh development (i.e., figuring out new ways to do something because there is no direct equivalent in functionality) The translation rate is 150 lines per day. The development rate is 25 lines per day We expect to devote 4 weeks to converting the dblib calls to ESQL/C calls. We also believe most of the work will be in the triggers and stored procedures work, since the differences in the two products are most pronounced in these areas. We come up with about 97 person-weeks of effort for the conversion, which includes installation, modifying some daemons, etc. My specific issues are: (1) is 4 weeks for the dblib to ESQL/C changes realistic -- it seems low to me; (2) is our translation/development expectation and lines per day metric realistic; and (3) are there areas that we have not considered (we will be trained on Informix, so I don't think base product knowledge is an issue). If you have experience in this kind of conversion, I would appreciate your feedback. If you work for a firm that does this kind of thing and would be interested in pursuing a bid, please contact me; if we can do the work more cheaply and quickly than inhouse, we will strongly consider it. Many thanks for your attention. -b -- ___________________________________ Paul Mahler pmahler@ix.netcom.com
