This is how I do it: I have a trigger on the insert. The trigger calls a procedure and passes as an argument the serial number just inserted. The procedure stores the serial number in a global variable The global variable is then accessible from any other procedure. I may have a twisted mind, but it works. I have not find anything simpler.
