"Ashby, David" <David.Ashby@workcover.nsw.gov.au> offerred: +Is there a reason why Informix doesn't detect for end of tape and then +ask for the tape to be changed? The current implementation has always +seemed very clumsy to me. It is a Unix issue. If you perform a write() to a tape drive and doing so puts you past the end of tape marker, Unix returns a hardware error. There is no way to differentiate what caused the hardware error, i.e. it could have been a legit problem writing the tape, not the end of tape. At least that's the way Unix traditionally behaved. New device drivers may be smarter than that now, but tbtape/ontape still assumes the behavior above.
