Advise on how to migrate IDS 9.4 FC4 from HP-PARIS
Posted in 2005
A user asked how to move IDS 9.40.FC4 plus I4GL/ISQL 7.32 from HP-UX PA-RISC to Itanium: whether dbexport/dbimport was needed, whether 4GL code must be recompiled, and known issues. Replies said PA-RISC-to-Itanium is a homogeneous migration, so no unload/reload is required: just make the same raw devices/SAN volumes available to the Itanium machine (vgimport, symlinks, or dd/network copy), stop IDS on the old box and start the Itanium binaries. Advice was to use a newer 9.40 fixpack (FC6/FC7) for performance, do any IDS 10 upgrade as a separate second step, and recompile 4GL applications with the new-platform binaries. No post-migration feedback was posted.

Hi all,
We will migrating soon from PA-RISC to ITANIUM, we have:
HP-UX ... B.11.11 U 9000/800
IDS 9.40.FC4
ISQL 7.32.FC2 (Dev. & Runtime)
4GL-RDS Version 7.32.FC2
I4GL(Debugger) 7.32.FC2
So:
- Are there any know issues with the versions above on ITANIUM? (FC3?)
- Do we have to recompile forms, 4gls? (I suppose we don't have to)
- Any one knows related information (links, docs, etc.) related to PA-RISC to
ITANIUM migration?
- Do I need necessarily have to do a dbexport/dbimport or there are faster
ways to do it?
If it is important: we have a SAN (Eva3000) so that data is not physical
attached to database server.
Any recomendation would be very appreciated.

Hi,
a HP-UX PA-Risc to Itanium migration is a 'homogenous' migration!
You don't need to export/import your databases. In a SAN environment
you have three options:
- make the database raw devices visible on the new Itanium machine
(vgimport, hopefully no name conflicts, symbolic links for raw devices)
Afterwards just stop the database on PA-Risc and start on Itanium
- If you want to use new diskspace:
Same as above, but copy the raw devices with dd to the new lvols
- OR (without SAN reconfiguration) copy the data over the LAN (remote
shell commands, depending on LAN speed with intermediate gzip/gunzip)
Versions: I would suggest the newest version - should be FC6 or FC7 .
There have been performance issues with older versions.
If don't have experience with migrating 4GL/applications etc.
PA-Risc codes/programs are supposed to run on Itanium hardware
but I'm not sure if it is a good idea if you have complex
applications (or performance demanding ones).
E.g. the IDS (PA-Risc) himself doesn't run on Itanium correctly :-)

Andreas

Excellent !
I specially like this:
> - make the database raw devices visible on the new
> Itanium machine (vgimport, hopefully no name
> conflicts, symbolic links for raw devices)
> Afterwards just stop the database on PA-Risc
> and start on Itanium.
But since we are migrating in the same machine then there is no need to import
the raw devices, isn't it?
I mean:
- Deatach the raw devices
- Upgrade PA-RISC to ITANIUM (Including IDS 9.4FC4)
- Attach raw devices
- Start the engine
Would do the migration?
Other question:
Since we have 9.4FC4 I think there is no problem moving to 9.4FC[6|7], but if
we plan to go with IDS10 would the procedure be the same?
J.
PD: IDS.10.0.FC3 for HP-UX Itanium is available?

Hello,
you are right, when upgrading the machine there should be no need to
move the raw devices. I think you don't need to detach/attach them even -
but you should discuss that with an OS expert - maybe you set them
read-only just to be sure.
For IDS10: We haven't migrated to IDS10 until now. I think you could do
the migration in one step. But I would prefer to split it into two parts:
1) PA-Risc to Itanium: upgrade machine, start/stop IDS 9.4 with Itanium
binaries
2) 9.4 to 10.0: on the upgraded machine do a normal IDS upgrade
And I would prefer to wait a few days between 1) and 2) !-)

Hi,
If you application is written in 4GL and OS version is
change. Then 4GL application requires re-complie on
new OS.
Thanks
