Beta Testers and HOWTO Writers Needed!! The Informix on Linux Committee needs you help. As Informix continues to port and release products for Linux, we on the IIUG Advocacy side will be assisting them with controlled beta tests as well as producing HOWTO documents for publication on the IIUG and other sites. But we need your help to accomplish this. If you are interested in participating in either of these efforts, please see the information that follows. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THAT ANY SPECIFIC INFORMIX PRODUCT IS/HAS BEEN/WILL BE PORTED. The committee is aware of, and is participating in discussions with Informix product and marketing management regarding what Informix should port next. Based on these discussions, we feel confident that other products will be released. HOWTO Writers: One of the greatest strengths of the Linux environment is the real-life documentation of HOWTO install, implement, operate, and tune Linux and Linux- based applications. Part of our responsibility as a group of people requesting products from Informix on Linux is to provide the HOWTOs and to get them distributed to the various HOWTO repositories. Currently we have an installation and basic configuration guide for the S.E. and ESQL/C products written by Nils Myklebust as well as a link to some GlibC information. Bert Barbe has written a HOWTO on CLI Connectivity. Marco Greco is working on an IBCS compatibility and implementation HOWTO. However we need HOWTOs written on the following topics: ODBC Connectivity JDBC Connectivity Perl, DBD, and DBI other Informix product HOWTOs as products are released. Nils' document may also need some refreshing and updating. We also need someone who will get the HOWTOs distributed to the major repositories and their existance announced in the appropriate Linux forums. If you can help with this, please contact TOM SCHAEFER (netd@mindspring.com) who is coordinating this effort. Beta Testers: As indicated earlier, we are not announcing the port of any specific product but the probability is high that other products will be released on Linux. Prior to their release, Informix will want to conduct some structured beta tests. The requirements for any given set of tests will vary depending on the product. In general though, participants will be selected based on their level of experience with Informix products as well as the platform they have to test on. This would include Linux distribution and version, size of potential test database, complexity and type of potential test application, type of hardware (uni or dual CPU), tape archive device, etc. As you would expect, participants will have to agree to work under a Non-Disclosure Agreement. If you want to participate in a future beta test program, please contact ART KAGEL (kagel@erols.com) who will be coordinating this effort . Please give him a *general* idea of your experience with *specific* Informix products as well as the type of test platform you could use. Also indicate which Informix products you are willing to, or are interested in testing if and when they are available. As always, your comments, suggestions, or questions are always welcome. You can participate in the larger Informix on Linux advocacy effort by subscribing to the linux-informix majordomo list operating at iiug.org. The Informix on Linux Steering Committee
