Temporary Tables in 4GL
Posted in 1991
G'day, I have a client site where they have a 4GL program that stores the result of a query-by-example into a temporary table. The rows in the temporary table are then displayed in list format for further user selection. When one person is using the application it all works fine. Sometimes when several people are using the application it works fine. But not always... :-( In the middle of putting the query results into the table the application crashes and returns to the shell prompt (error messages not known yet, as they start the application from a shell script which clears the screen when the application terminates... I'll get the error messages tomorrow!) Informix Software (Australia) has told me that 1) temporary tables always have a unique name internally, so that there should be no conflict between different user processes using the same application code; 2) temporary tables are not created in memory so its not a memory problem; 3) I should check the dbspace to make sure there is enough space for the temporary tables; (there appears to be) 4) they haven't seen this problem before. There has also been one report of the message "Cannot remove temporary table user.tablename" but that occurred _after_ the program had successfully run and the user was exiting that part of the program. If anyone has seen this before or has any ideas I would appreciate hearing from you.
