Re: Tape drive or No tape drive ?

Octav has it right. In a power failure the engine should come up just
fine. Remember that logs with active transactions are NEVER archived so
after a power failure the engine will go through fast recovery fine. Now
depending on the logging mode of your database you will either loose a few
transactions to rollbacks (unbuffered logging) or several (buffered
logging) or your database may have consistency problems and trashed
indexes (unlogged) as some tables were updated but not others and index
pages were not flushed to disk. The logging level of the databases are
far more important than logical log archiving for this type of crash.
Now if you lost a drive and have to restore from tape, THEN you will curse
not having those log backups as you will have to restore AS OF the archive
with no easy way to catch up.
You CAN BTW back up the logical logs to disk. Get my package utils3_ak
which has an ALARMPROGRAM that does this using ontape whenever a log
fills. Utils3_ak is in the IIUG Software Repository.
