The OpenLink Multi-tier ODBC drivers detect the situation where you are
ordering by a column not in the select list and append the needed column(s)
to the select (throwing away the data retrieved). I'm not sure if the
"throw away" column gets transmitted over the network or not (I would
suspect not based upon the architecture of the product). I have had some
situations with older versions of OpenLink where this did not always work
correctly and I have not "stress tested" this using current versions, but I
have not encountered any specific problems with this lately.
