Re: output of set explain ?

I know with version 8.21 of Dynamic Server XPO (which used to be called XPS)
ththis feature was added. Here's some info from
$INFORMIXDIR/release/SQLSDOC_8.2:
The SET EXPLAIN statement has been extended with a new clause: FILE TO. This
clause allows users to have better control over the SET EXPLAIN
functionality. By using the FILE TO clause, users can control the name and
location of the output file and can isolate SET EXPLAIN output for separate
queries or sessions.
The default behavior for SET EXPLAIN ON is the same as before. The output
filename is sqexplain.out until this filename is changed by a SET EXPLAIN
FILE TO command. If sqlexplain.out already exists, output is appended to the
end of the file.
The behavior for SET EXPLAIN OFF remains the same. This command stops the
generation of output to the output file.
The SET EXPLAIN FILE TO command turns on explain output to the specified
file. This filename remains in effect until the end of the session or until
it is changed by another SET
EXPLAIN FILE TO statement.
The <filename> parameter can be any valid combination of optional path and
required file name. If there is no path component, the directory containing
the file will be determined as in the existing SET EXPLAIN ON command.
The WITH APPEND option of the FILE TO clause causes explain output to be
appended to the end of an existing file. The user can change the append mode
with subsequent SET EXPLAIN FILE TO statements. A SET EXPLAIN FILE TO
statement without a WITH APPEND clause causes explain output to overwrite
the contents of the existing file.
The syntax now supports:
SET EXPLAIN FILE TO 'filename' [with append]
where 'filename' can be either a string, a variable or a character
expression.
