If you do this at the wrong time , you can completely demolish your entire Online database. (I have done this, and the only way my system could be recovered was for an Informix tech to dial in to it and fiddle around with some kind of proprietary programs which he up-loaded). To avoid this, I was told, before killing anything using kill -9 you should first run tbstat -u. Look in the 2nd column of its output. If any of the flags are L (latch) or X (critical section!) then do NOT use kill -9. Otherwise, kill -9 should be safe. If this doesn't work or you end up destroying your database using this advice, I take no responsibility. This is merely what I was told by an Informix tech support person, and I have often found their advice to be wrong. It's safer to never use kill -9. I have been told to try both kill -13 and kill -15 , then a normal kill. Neither of these always works.
