4gl Segmentation Fault
Posted in 1995
} We have ported a 4gl application from a MIPS to DEC box.
} The application has 4ge's run from other 4ge's (ie run "prog.4ge").
} In certain places the message "Segmentation Fault" flashes up and
} it returns to the calling program. For a given terminal it happens
} in exactly the same place each, time but varies between terminals.
} (We've tried xterms, wy120 and vt220 emulators)
}
} If the 4ge where the problem occurs is run separately from the
} command line everything is OK.
} (OSF V3.0, 4gl 4.13 UD1, Online 5.05 UC1)
}
} Any ideas?
}
} Thanks, William
Just some thoughts...
We had to get several patches to make OnLine 7.1 run under DEC/OSF,
do you have all of them? It took some from Informix and some from
DEC, as I recall. They were not very forthcoming with them, either.
Did you carefully read the release notes? You have to set the memory
parameters just right for any platform (semaphores and such) or you
might get that error.
From another post:
}PDQ in UC1 is buggy. If you have it turned on then it's a good idea
}to turn it off by setting PDQ priority to zero in onmonitor.
}Symtoms of the problem are - Shared memory not being freed up nicely
}and lots more shared memory than you would expect being used up.
}onstat -g seg shows segments holding 3 or 4 pages open even when no
}one is connected. For a period of time I was rolling online every
}morning to clean up shared memory
}Setting PDQ to zero has meant a hugely smaller signature in shared
}memory and the system runniing clean as a whistle. I am told the fix
}is in UD1 but I am holding out until 7.2 (next month?) as it is not a
}problem for us performance-wise.

But I think he's talking about v7.1. Are you sure they ported v5 to
DEC/OSF? I thought they left that behind on the old MIPS Ultrix boxes,
but maybe that's just because we wanted the ODS features.
Informix does not really support the 64-bit addressing, BTW. You are
still limited to a 2 gig partition if you want tech support.
Let us know how it turns out...
