You can fragment in a round-robin fashion or invent an alforithm of your choice to specify which fragment the data lands on. The benefit of using fragments, combined with parallel data queries, are numerous. For instance, a single query can be decomposed into sub tasks and executed simultaneously, reducing the amount of time needed to answer the question. Multiple users accessing the same table benefit for the same reason and because multiple sets of r/w heads are servicing their tasks. Using raid disk can actually undue the fragmentation you are striving for because of the inherent striping being done at the hardware level. ================================================================ Michael T.
