Even with unbuffered logging, you still use the log buffer. It's only with the commit that you write the buffer to the physical log file. A lot of this has to do with the size of your rows, the number of rows updated per transaction, etc... It really doesn't hurt to have the log buffer size over-configured because we only write out how much space in the log buffer is actually used.
