insert TEXT type

I have left my docs at work and am stuck right now attempting to insert a sizable chunk of text into a table with a TEXT type column. I know that: insert into table (text_col) values ('string longer then 256 will not work') won't work. Can some please tell me the syntax for a sql statement that will insert into a text type column.
