Integer versus character fields

Where can I find a good explanation on the web of why integer fields are better than character fields. There will probably be cases where character fields are better, but in general I am under the impression that integers are smaller (need less space) and faster. I just want a good explanation / comparison of this. If you can just point me to some reading material I would really appreciate that.
