Adding chunks
Posted in 2003
A user on IDS 9.3/AIX could no longer add chunks, getting "Unable to extend 2 reserved pages for Chunk descriptor page in ROOT chunk", despite free space, because his initial root chunk was only 30MB. Replies explained that all reserved/extended reserve pages must live in the *first* chunk of rootdbs (check free space with oncheck -pe), so extra rootdbs chunks don't help; freeing space by moving logical/physical logs out of that chunk was suggested. With the logs already elsewhere, the consensus fix was to dbexport (or use HPL for speed), rebuild the instance with a much larger initial rootdbs (512MB+) plus separate log/data dbspaces, then reimport. A side discussion about HPL express-mode load errors was left unresolved.

Hey all -- Running IDS 9.3 on AIX. My initial root chunk was 30 MB, now have 3 chunks totalling 120MB. Plenty of space now. I have also successfully added several 1GB and 2GB chunks to my dbspaces. But now when I try to continue adding chunks to my dbspaces, I am getting this message: "Unable to extend 2 reserved pages for Chunk descriptor page in ROOT chunk." Guess I have run out of reserved pages with such a small initial root chunk. I originally sized the server appropriately, and then the customer unexpectedly increased the space needed by an order of 10. I haven't found specific documentation telling me what I can do to resolve this so that I can continue adding chunks. I'm nowhere close to running out of disk space on my partitions, and as I first mentioned, the root chunk has plenty of room. Thanks for any help! Rahn Rahn Payne Rehab Manager, Inc. Hello Rahn,
All reserved pages and extended reserve pages must be in the first chunk of
the rootdbs. I would run oncheck -pe and see how how many free pages there
are in the first chunk of the rootdbs.
Cheers,
Hans

It's not usual to see more than one chunk
assigned to rootdbs, I would
recommend you to create the first rootdbs chunk bigger than the others.
You don't need more than one chunk for this, because the data will be stored
in specific dbspaces.

Just in case.
Are your physical and/or logical logs in rootdbs and on the first chunk
?
If so, take them out from there. You'll get some more free space.

Hans, Sonia and Victor -- thanks for the tips. My physical and logical logs
are in their own spaces. Are dynamically allocated logical logs created in
the initial root chunk? If not, I think the thing to do is to dbexport
everything and start over with a much bigger initial root chunk. It's a
fair amount of work but I don't see an alternative. What I thought was
going to be a 4GB system turned into a 30GB nightmare, and I only learned
that a little at a time. I appreciate all of the feedback!

Hi bro
I'd do the following
- dbexport
- destroy current instance. create new instance with a large rootdbs (=>512MB)
- create additional dbspaces for data, logical & physical logs
- MOVE IMMEDIATELY logical & physical logs from rootdbs to new dbspaces
- dbimport data, as last step
hope it helps
greetings
As a slight modification . . .
You can use the HPL to unload and load data quicker than dbexport. If the
instance is small, then it might not be worth the effort, but if your tables
are large, then HPL could be worthwhile.

John,
How does HPL works when you take copy from one unix box to different unix
box, with same Informix verison, we go couple of errors while loading data

Don't have exact error with me right now, but it was
something like :
"Error on line 5000 cannot load data"
The message was same and it occured every 4 to 5 k lines, table had 3
million records, data was good because the same table was downloaded via
"unload" and loaded with "load" successfully.
