HP 9.04 PATCH INFO
Posted in 1997
Yesterday we decided to put on a couple of patches to help out with some performance problems we've been experiencing. HP-UX 9.04, informix 7.11uc1, T500 server, 6 cpu's We put on the NFS Kernel Megapatch...PHKL_9393 Simple enough.. install, update, reboot, bring up informix. Noooo.....informix would not come up because it pointed to some bad chunks on 2 of the 10 gig drives that we had after rebooting the server. We tried several times to reboot, powering drives off...etc.. but still did not know why we only had these two drives giving chunk errors. After many hours we found out that the number of Maxvg's had changed to a smaller number. This was after we did a whole bunch of other checks. Using vgscan -v we saw we could not map the vg's to the physical vols and it told us to use the vgimport command to complete the process. That step failed and lead us to using vgexport. We were unsure as to how to use the vgexport command to remove some entries from the /etc/lvmtab file so we ended up calling support and learned the following things that may be useful to others. You can... 1. remove raw devices, lvols, group file in the affected volume group under /dev 2. recreate the vg directory, recreate the group file using the mknod command and then use vgimport to get the rlvol and lvol back. Then activate the imported devices using vgchange, then chmod/chown to informix. 3. Also using the get_kgenfile executable you can view the kernel in an ascii format. This was all good stuff to learn and may not be new news to some of you however when you blow away the rlvol and lvol and group files you would expect to lose everything and it's a bit scary but you can get this stuff back without too much of a problem if you do things in the correct order. Check kernel parameters first...!! Ed edbid@cobe.com
